Lines to be spoken by Edward Terry, Esq. Old friend and comrade, many and oft's the time that you and I have interchanged in rhyme counters of mirth and coinage of caprice, bright from the mint of Byron and of Reece. We've danced and sung together, always gay mates, in those dear days of old when we were playmates. We've memories, I, who speak, and you, who listen, that cause our hearts to throb, our eyes to glisten in such an unison as friendship mellows; And so, perhaps, as mouthpiece for our fellows, "Tis fitting I should speak, who at your side, - in welcome wild to you, - so oft have stood and watched you, in stage-parlance, "make your wood," as, large your laughing legend you would write across the face of London night by night. Star of Burlesque! – was ever such a Boy? Incarnate gaiety, instinct with joy, an elf of laughter and a sprite of song, compact of quicksilver you danced along: small marvel that you brought the houses down and drew all captive the delighted Town, that still remembers in its play-house chat "How splendid Nellie Farren was in that! The Address written by Mr. Henry Hamilton and spoken by Mr. Edward Terry. And to unnumbered past delights confesses in summing up the list of your success, from out the laughing echoes of the past they throng, a crowd all joy from first to last: Old friends whose faces all familiar show Little Don Caesar, Fra Diavolo (of burlesque brigands quite the prince and pearl!) Then Thaddeus courting the Bohemian G'yurl: Ruy Blas, whom Monte Cristo close relieves And Ganem, shadowed by the Forty Thieves: Alert Aladdin, chirpy Chinese scamp, feeding with energy "The Sacred Lamp" Ah! Who that ever heard it could forget that street-waif's song? it haunts the memory yet! Your "Little Doctor Faust" who could resist oh? Not one, - I pledge the word of your Mephisto! And for your other triumphs – in their van. To name alone "Sam Willoughby" and "Nan," all these are yours and all are ours in part, we know them as we now yourself, by heart! Bound up with you they're dear to us, to these [indicating audience]. Ay! And to hundreds, thousands over seas. O'er the Atlantic you have cast your spell, and turned Antipodean heads as well; in fact no English speaking spot so barren it hasn't grown some bays for Nellie Farren! But here in London, you're our very own, your foot is on your native – paving stone: your London that has loved you for so long, since first her street-boys whilst your first song and if you're London's why you're ours more still, ours to whose Art you've brought such charm, such skill, such patient work as must command all thanks, all honour we can yield throughout our ranks; and whilst your Public but the Artist view, we know the Artist and the Woman too, and knowing, love her! and it is to pay some little tribute, - in your hands to lay our pride in you (all others' pride above) our little, lightsome labour, all of love, and ask you to accept them, that we're here to wish you sunshine full, unclouded, clear then let me speak to you on all our part and say – one voice vibrating from one heart "May you aye find amid Life's devious ways, "A wealth of peace, a world of happy days," And, - homeliest phrase – but may each word caress you, "Good luck, sweet Nellie Farren, and God bless you!" Henry Hamilton.
