A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE SCENE.
Macbeth, spurred on by his ambitious wife, murdered Duncan,
King of Scotland, and ascended the throne: To secure his power, he
aftewards hired murderers to slay Banquo, and fearing the opposition of
Macduff, Thane of Fife, put his wife and children to the sword.
Both he and his wife were afflicted with terrible remorse for these
cruel murders.
Nightly. Lady Macbeth was burdened with a dream in which she
acted her part in them over again.
Remorse would make her rise from her bed, and walk in her sleep,
reproaching Macbeth for his want of firmness. and striving to wash the
witness of her guilt from her hands.
