NOTE.- King John seized the English throne in spite of the undoubted
right of Prince Arthur.
King Phillip of France at first supported Prince Arthur's claim
to the English throne, but eventually forsook him and became
reconciled to John, and the poor little prince was taken prisoner.
King John could not rest while Arthur lived, and in this scene
he is seen plotting with Hubert to kill him.

NOTE.-Constance did all in her power to assert her son's (Prince
Arthur's) rights, and to defend him from the over-reaching
schemes of his unscrupulous uncle King John. She vehemently
resented the cowardly desertion of King Phillip of her son's
cause. Finally, when she learnt that her idolized son_ (on top
of all the overwhelming disasters which bhd befallen him), was
a prisoner in the hand of his cruel uncle, her grief and despair
knew no bounds and she became almost mad.
